Apple Crisp – Can be Gluten Free!

The air is crisp, the holidays are in the air, and the apples are in season. This triple threat can only mean one thing: Apple crisp.

Pull a Mary Poppins and step into my kitchen while we make this traditional dessert together!

Here is what you will need:

For the filling:

5 pounds apples, combination of honey crisp and granny smith, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/8 slices
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg

For the topping:

1 1/2 cups flour (use gluten free all purpose flour to make this gluten free)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup gluten free old fashioned oats
1/2 pound unsalted butter, cutter into cubes, cold

1. Preheat the oven to 350F.

2. Cut up your apples and toss them in a bowl with the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice. Put into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Set aside.

3. Place the remaining sugars, flour, gluten free oats, and cubed butter into a bowl. Mix together with a paddle attachment on a stand mixer until the butter in the mixture is about pea sized. Spread over top of the apples.

4. Place the dish on a sheet pan and bake for about an hour, until the stop is golden brown. If need be, turn the oven on broil for the last 5 minutes of baking to make it nice and brown.

5. Serve and enjoy!
