Charm City Cakes West and a Broken Birthday Cake!

Charm City Cakes West and a Broken Birthday Cake!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, everyone! I know – it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me. So let me bring you up to speed.

First off, last week, I made my very first flourless chocolate cake for my beautiful friend Amy on her birthday. I went for my morning workout at the Santa Monica stairs, cake tucked safely away in the car in its case. When I got back to the car….the cake was still there. Phew.

In my sweaty state, I drove toward Amy’s house to deliver the cake. I was in a great mood. I rounded the corner toward Wilshire, and heard a loud noise. It came from inside the car. The cake! Not good. I looked over and saw that the cake stand had fallen over as I had turned the corner, and that half the cake was smushed up against the glass covering. I pulled over, and put the cake back upright. There were cake crumbs all over the passenger side floor, but luckily the actual cake had not touched the floor. But it certainly did get ruined. I gave it to Amy anyway, and she took it as she laughed at me and my blonde moves for the morning.

The lesson? Be careful when you are driving with a cake on a cake stand in your front seat. Just saying…

The rest of the week was spent decorating for Halloween, experimenting with recipes, volunteering (tutoring, teaching piano, etc.) and one other very important, very big thing.

Have any of you ever watched Ace of Cakes? Then you know that the featured bakery on that show is Charm City Cakes, and that the show was on for 10 years. You may not know that Charm City Cakes opened up a location in L.A. a few months ago.

Do you get where this is going?

🙂

A dear friend of mine produced Ace of Cakes, and has been tirelessly trying to get me an introduction to the crew for the last 6 months! Well, it finally happened a few weeks ago, and last week, I went into Charm City Cakes West to discuss the possibility of interning with them. I even said I would scrub their toilets, with a smile, for FREE! They were thrilled, and you know what?

I start my very first day of interning at CHARM CITY CAKES WEST ON WEDNESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I get a hell yeah????!!!!

I am so excited, I cannot even explain it – maybe even to the point of throwing up. Seriously! I promise to keep you posted and to let you know what I’m up to during my time there – I can’t wait!

In the meantime, my lovely boyfriend celebrated his birthday on Friday, so one of his brothers flew out from NYC to be here. He is here for the week, so I, of course, planned out an entire week’s worth of food! My latest creation? Tofu tacos with sweet potatoes! I took Bobby Flay’s fish taco recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/fish-tacos-recipe/index.html) and some of the components of another blogger, Joy the Baker’s,  black bean sweet potato tacos (http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2011/10/black-bean-and-sweet-potato-tacos/) and played 🙂 I served them with homemade guacamole, hot sauce, and cabbage, and they were so good, friends – so good!

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to enter the Malibu Pie Contest for next weekend, and figure out what to wear on my first day at Charm City Cakes on Wednesday! It’s like the first day of school, all over again!!!

All my love,

Lauren
